In
the youngest mountains of the world, in the youngest mountain state,
the youngest people have begun a movement.
They
came from Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya,
Tripura, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and from mountainous areas
in Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, as well as the
districts of Uttarakhand. From 17-21 May 2002, during the first
International Conference of Mountain Children in Dehradun, India,
they worked on the framework for this forum and identified the issues
they want to address.
They
overcame differences in language, culture, nationality, religion,
class, and socieoeconomic levels and impressed the everyone who
saw them with their energy, idealism and determinination to improve
their lives and the lives of other children.
On
May 21st, 2002 they lit a light, which we hope will spread across
the world and illuminate the lives of children everywhere.
During
the conference, delegates to the ICMC and the Uttarakhand State
Children's Secretariat produced a declaration of issues the young
people felt needed to be addressed. Please click on the links below
