Pithoragarh

Located deep in the hills of the Himalayas, Pithoragarh is one of the more remote districts in Uttarakhand and has the distinction of having Nepal and China on two of its borders. Pithoragarh has a population density of 65 people per square km. Literacy in the district is 76.5%, slightly higher than the state average. The district has 1,202 primary schools, 225 junior high schools, 53 high schools, and 65 Intermediate (classes 11&12) schools. (Census 2001)

Activities:

  • Nov 2009: A one day children’s follow up workshop on the Right to Information was organized on 22nd November, 2009 at Hailpia in district Pithoragarh by ARPAN. In this followup workshop 78 children from the different villages of the 7 Bal Panchayat shared their experiences with each other. Four School Principals, one ASHA worker, two health workers and other members of the village community also participated in the workshop.
  • Aug 2009: MCF's partner for the RTI worshops in Pithoragarh, ARPAN has conducted a series of 5 village level workshops and have involved a total of 151 children. Read about the RTI applications filed by these children.
  • May 2009: The RTI works. Read how the Rani Lakshmi Bai Baal Panchayat, Askote, used the RTI to take their first steps towards improvment of the conditions of their village.
  • Jan 2009: The Silicon Valley chapter of Asha for Education has joined forces with the MCF to promote understanding and use of the Right to Information act in rural mountain communities. The MCF is partnered by 18 NGOs to help spread the awarness amongst the village children. ARPAN in Pitoragarh, is one such partner and they have conducted a series of 5 RTI workshops at the village level. RTI applications have been filed with the concerned departments. Read more ....


  • May 2005: Thanks to a grant from the Barton Foundation, the MCF was able to provide some books to the library the children have opened in Askote. The books, an assortment of Hindi, English, reference, and stories for different levels and ages were officially presented to representatives from the Pithoragarh MCF by Pithoragarh District Magistrate, Mr. Amit Negi, at the disaster preparedness workshop there.

  • May 2005: The Pithoragarh MCF chapter hosted a workshop on natural disaster mitigation for 70 children from around the state of Uttarakhand. During the workshop, the District Magistrate of Pithoragarh, Mr. Amit Negi, met with the participants and heard about their work as well as their concerns. Vickie Basera of Askote, speaking for the Pithoragarh MCF chapters, offered Mr. Negi the help and support of their chapter. He also expressed their concerns about the Askote Intercollege, which had insufficient teachers, and their newly acquired information about old mine tunnels under the Askote region and their potential of weakening the ground there in case of an earthquake. Mr. Negi noted down their concerns and asked Mr. Sumit Joshi, of the Pithoragarh Disaster Mitigation and Management Cell, to visit the area and evaluate the risk posed by the mines and suggest appropriate preventative measures.

  • February 2005: Taking a leaf from Uttarkashi's book, the Pithoragarh MCF chapter has opened a library of their own in the village of Askote. All the members participated in this process and members Rahul, Niraj, Ravi, Piyush, and Mahendra even brought books from their own homes for the library.
