General
Information and News
Champawat
is located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand on the border of
Nepal. It is famous for its many temples. The literacy rate in Champawat
is 71.1%, which is slightly lower than the state average (2001 Census).
The district has 490 primary schools, 107 junior high schools, 27
high schools and 23 Intermediate (classes 11&12) schools. The
closest university is located in the neighboring district of Nainital.
The population density of Champawat is 126 people per square kilometer.

Recent
activities:
May
21, 2003: To mark the anniversary
of the MCF, the Champawat manch held a program that drew
about 400 children, women and men from the Lohaghat block of the
district. The event included detailed discussion on the objectives
of the MCF, and drawing, cultural programs, and general knowledge
contests all focusing on the topics of jan, jungle, jameen, janwar,
jal (people, forests, land, animals, and water) and on the dangers
of superstitions and harmful cultural traditions.
In
the cultural competition, Saraswati and Anju placed first; Mamta,
Rekha, Rita, and Kavita placed second; and Sooraj, Jagdeesh, Ravindra,
and Mohit placed third.
In
the drawing competition, based on the theme "The present we
live in" Khila Bisht placed first and Bhanu Prabha placed second.
The
program started at 10 a.m., lunch was at 2 p.m. and the program
was to end at 5 p.m. but went on longer because the cultural programs
were so many and the entrants kept increasing! The program ended
with prizes being awarded to the winners.
