June 2008:This is the story of Pathar Katta baal panchayat. We have a very sincere hardworking and honest baal panchayat Secretary who takes his appointment very seriously. He is a student of class XII and his name is Digambar. Our baal panchayat focuses on generating awareness on issues that touch our lives like health, education and birth registrations amonst other activities. As a Baal Mela was being held on 15th May 2008, by SBMA/PLAN, it was decided by the our baal panchayat that we would use this opportunity to generate awareness on important issues such as education, health, child rights etc. To this effect a Nukad Natak (street play)was presented during the mela. Our Baal Panchayat also decided to undertake the registrations of all births post 1994 as these had not been done in the village of Debpuri. Under the able guidance of Digambar  a total of 26 pending registrations were completed in the village. As our baal panchayat did not have a play ground,  Digambar took it upon himself to meet the MLA and request the sanction of a play ground.
We are proud to have Digambar in our baal Panchayat and hope that other villages and baal Panchayats too have the fortune of having a good and energetic secretary so that their baal Panchayats too can make a difference in their areas.

June 2008: In Mehalchauri  village of Disrtict Chamoli, the playground for the children was in considerable disrepair. The baal panchayat members discussed their problem with the Village Panchayat members who after serious considerations of the proposal released Rs 84, 000/- for the playground. However, this amount was not sufficient to make a good quality playground.
The baal panchayat members had received training under the Umang programme (SBMA/PLAN) on how to collect, collate and present data. They used these skills to prepare a presentation with which they approached the State Planning Committee, though the local trade union and their village panchayat, for the remaining amount. The State Planning Committee was impressed by the presentation made by the baal panchayat and agreed to sanction the additional Rs 65 lakhs for playground.

September 2005: We received the following letter from Dhani Ram Varma, of the Bal Panchayat Jagri:

Our Bal Panchayt (Jagri, Gairsain) is helping support our community. Our Bal Panchayat was formed on the 17th October, 2001. We have 27 members. We meet on one Sunday of every month and talk about the problems in our village. All the members give their suggestions and support for how we may solve these problems. We have collected Rs. 12,000 in our Bal Panchayat’s account. During the Polio Vaccination Program, our Bal Panchayat was very active: We went from house to house and told the people about the polio eradication campaign and motivated them to take their children in to get the drops. We identified the children in our area who had dropped out of school and motivated them to rejoin the school. From time to time we carry out a clean-up campaign in our village during which we clean the village pathways and water sources. For the past two years, we have also been continuously planting trees and fodder on a 5-hectare plot of land. During village events such as weddings and poojas we provide help and support. Bal Panchayat Jagri has, through our creativity, organized many programs and campaigns in our villages. Our Bal Panchayat members, on a personal level, have a number of accomplishments. Our Bal Panchayat is always working towards development in our area in accordance with the aims and goals of the MCF. Our effort is to ensure that we always preserve these mountains and move forward in unity to create an identity at the global level for mountain children.
