Report

June 5th 2010 – The Horrawalla Baal Panchayat is special. They decided to organise a painting competition for World Environment Day. The programme was organised by Deepika, Swati, Preeti, Devvrat, Intkhab, Shweta, Monica and Kaushlesh - members of the Horrawalla Baal Panchayat. They visited 5 villages and invited children to participate in the painting competition. 21 children attended the function. The children discussed the issues of environment and through their paintings the children had to mention what they thought about the environment and what they wanted to do to protect their environment.

The children drew lovely colourful and beautiful pictures. It was difficult to select winners so it was decided that the children themselves would vote for the best painting. Two paintings stood out from the rest and the children decided to award both the artists with a first prize.

The Winners were Madhubala and Prateeksha. Not only were their drawings beautiful but their message along with their drawings were thought provoking.

1st Prize Madhubala                                     1st Prize Prateeksha

Thoughts

Madhubala, Class 10, Village Tillvadi, Bal Panchayat Horrawalla

Pollution in our environment is becoming a very huge problem for humanity. To save ourselves from this pollution we must plant as many trees as possible, if we don’t have trees and bushes it will become impossible for us to breathe, water sources will dry up. If anyone cuts down one tree they should plant two more in its stead so that we can prevent pollution. It is important for us to protect trees. We should plant trees around our houses so that we can get clean oxygen. We should plant trees bushes and flowers around us. This is a responsibility that each and every child should take on.

Prateeksha Rawat, Class 9, Bal Panchayat Horrawalla

Trees provide air and increase the underground water level. Trees provide us many things. But we humans do not understand this and keep cutting down trees despite knowing that cutting down trees will increase environmental pollution and decrease the water table level. Day after day the cutting of trees is increasing soil erosion. Due to the cutting of trees the ozone layer is getting destroyed and ultra violet rays are reaching our earth increasing the risk of illnesses. We should not cut trees but we should protect them. We should all unite and oppose the people who want to cut trees. Protecting trees is not the responsibility of one person but the responsibility of us all. And where many trees are being cut we should use the non violent path shown in the chipko movement. We should plan as many trees as possible.

Manisha Tomar, Village Kotra Kalyanpur,Bal Panchayat Horrawalla

It is the responsibility of each one of us to protect the trees. Trees provide clean air and oxygen to us, that is why we should save and protect trees. Cutting of trees is illegal.

Reshma Bisht, Village Jagatpur, Bal Panchayat Horrawalla

Trees provide us with oxygen. Trees provide us with clean air, water and food. Trees prevent pollution that is why we should plant as many trees as possible.

We should not pollute our water. In the village people wash their buffaloes in the same place that they collect drinking water.

Bhavna Dhiman, Class 8,Village Chandpur

Water Pollution means dirty river water coming in our taps. We should not dirty our water. Water is life. If we pollute the water then disease will also spread through the entire world. And everyone will die. If we don’t have clean water we will have many problems.

Laxmi, Class 6, Village Chandpur

We should not dirty the water around us. Water gives us life and is very useful for us. We wash clothes, cook food, wash dishes etc. In my drawing there is a tank and the tap is open and water is being wasted. A girl was walking towards that house when she saw the water being wasted. She turned the tap off. So if any of you ever see water being wasted please turn the tap off.
