UTTARKASHI:

Uttarkashi District covers an area of 8016 sq Kms and lies high in the Himalaya range.The district contains the source of both the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, which attract thousands of Hindu pilgrims. The district lies on the main route to Gangotri, has many Hindu temples, and is also considered an important Hindu pilgrimage centre. It has a population of 295013 (2001)

Group Activities:

Aug - Jan 2011: 5 two day workshops on the Right to Information Act sponsored by Asha (SV) supported by MCF were conducted by the NGO HENSR, in the district of Dehradun with the baal panchayats of Naugoan, Muradi, Badkot, Mangiyali, Nagan Gaon villages. 160 children and adults participated in the workshops and some filed RTI applications.

July 2010: A Give2Asia sponsored follow-up workshop on strenghtening children's groups was conducted on 25th July 2010 at village Nagan, district Uttarkashi, by MCF with their partner organisation HENSR.

June 2010: During a 2 day RTI facilitators workshop conducted By MCF and supported by Asha(SV) on 16th - 17th June,Yogesh, of HENSR Naugaon, was keen to train the children to file RTI applications to get the answers to long overdue unaswered questions!

May 2010: A one day workshop on Child Rights was organised in Purola village of Uttarkashi district, by MCF with their partners Nav Chetna Shiksha Sansthan. Read how the children discovered what their rights are.

May 2010: A workshop on strenghtening children's groups, was conducted on 24th-25th May 2010 at village Nagan, district Uttarkashi, by MCF with their partner organisation HENSR. This is the fourth wokshop in a series on 9, which have been sponsored by Give2Asia.

Sept 2009: A total of 9 RTI village level workshops have been conducted in Uttarkashi District of Uttrakhand. These workshops were conducted by MCF with their partner organisations SBMA/PLAN and Gramin Mahila Vikas Samiti (GMVS). A total of 276 children were involved in this initiative. RTI applications have been filed by a large number of children on matters which affect their day to day life.

March 2009: The Silicon Valley chapter of Asha for Education has joined forces with the MCF to promote understanding and use of the Right to Information act in rural mountain communities. The MCF is partnered by 18 NGOs to help spread the awarness amongst the village children. Shri Bhuvneshwari Mahila Ashram (SBMA) in Uttarkashi, is one such partner and they have conducted 2 RTI workshops at the village level.
