Almora: Almora is known as the cultural centre of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Located within view of the majestic Himalayas, Almora is also a popular tourist destination and is known for its hand-woven woolen products. The population density in Almora is 205 people per square kilometer. The literacy rate is 74.5%. There are 1,510 primary schools, 237 junior high schools, 82 high schools, and 104 intermediate (classes 11&12) schools in the district.(Census 2001)

NGO Partner Organisations: SUDHA (Facilitator:Mr.
D.C. Tiwari) Group Activities: Aug - Sept 2010: 5 two day workshops on the Right to Information Act sponsored by Asha (SV) supported by MCF were conducted by SUDHA, with the baal panchayats of Lakhnadi, Golne (Sutoli), Ladyuda, Kheerakot, Dhamukh (Byala) villages in the district of Almora. 183 children participated in the workshops and filed RTI applications. June 2010: During a 2 day RTI facilitators workshop conducted By MCF and supported by Asha(SV) on 16th - 17th June, B.S Bisht, of Sudha informed the group that during the last year responses to RTI applications were not received within the stipulated time frame. The officials were offensive towards the RTI and thus the people were scared to file applications. But this time they plan to take the cases upto the second appeal if required. Jan 2009: The Silicon Valley chapter of Asha for Education has joined forces with the MCF to promote understanding and use of the Right to Information act in rural mountain communities. The MCF is partnered by 18 NGOs to help spread the awarness amongst the village children. SUDHA in Almora, is one such partner and they have conducted a series of 5 RTI workshops at the village level. RTI applications have been filed with the concerned departments. Read more ....
